Our Story
A Place That Has Quietly Welcomed Generations
A place to pause. A place to reflect. A place to begin again.
Life today rarely slows down.
Between work, family and the constant demands of modern life, it is easy to lose sight of the simple moments that bring clarity and peace.
For generations, Tian Kong & Kancanarama Buddhist Temple has been a place where people return—not because life is without challenges, but because every journey benefits from moments of stillness, reflection and gratitude.
Some visitors come to offer prayers.
Some come to give thanks.
Some seek comfort during difficult times.
Others simply step inside for a few quiet moments away from the pace of the outside world.
Whatever brings you here, you are warmly welcome.
Our Story
Every temple has a beginning.
Ours began with the generosity and vision of Madam Kan Chee Yin, who believed that a sacred place should be open to anyone seeking spiritual cultivation and inner peace.
She first founded Tian Kong Temple, and in 1960 invited Thai monks to establish Kancanarama Buddhist Temple. Since then, these two traditions have flourished side by side on the same grounds for more than six decades—reflecting harmony, mutual respect and a shared commitment to serving the community.
Like many places of worship during Singapore's kampong days, the temple began as a humble attap building.
As the community grew, so did the temple.
The present temple was built in stages between 1982 and 1996, inspired by traditional Thai Buddhist architecture. Its graceful roofs, intricate gold ornamentation and peaceful surroundings were created with remarkable care and devotion. Many of the decorative carvings admired today were handcrafted over many years by the resident head monk, reflecting the patience, dedication and craftsmanship that continue to shape the temple's identity.
Today, Kancanarama Buddhist Temple is honoured to be one of only a small number of Thai Buddhist temples in Singapore officially recognised by the King of Thailand. This recognition reflects the temple's ongoing commitment to preserving the traditions of Thai Theravada Buddhism while serving Singapore's multicultural community.
Preserving Thai Buddhist Heritage
Beyond serving local devotees, the temple also plays a meaningful role in preserving Thai Buddhist traditions and cultural heritage in Singapore.
Over the years, the temple has been honoured to work alongside the Royal Thai Embassy in Singapore in organising Buddhist merit-making ceremonies to commemorate significant occasions involving members of the Thai Royal Family. These ceremonies bring together monks, the Thai community, Singaporean devotees and visitors in prayer, gratitude and acts of merit, reflecting the enduring friendship and cultural ties between Thailand and Singapore.
While these occasions are special, they reflect the temple's broader mission—to preserve authentic Buddhist traditions, foster understanding across cultures, and provide a welcoming place where people of all backgrounds can experience the timeless values of compassion, wisdom and generosity.

Living the Teachings Through Service
Buddhism is not only about what we learn.
It is also about how we live.
The temple is cared for by our resident monks, temple committee and a dedicated community of volunteers who work quietly behind the scenes to preserve traditions, organise religious ceremonies and festivals, and create a welcoming environment for everyone who visits.
Their service extends beyond the temple grounds.
Guided by the Buddhist values of dāna (generosity) and karuṇā (compassion), the temple regularly supports charitable and community initiatives that care for both people and animals.
The temple contributes rice and essential food supplies to Willing Hearts, supports programmes by MINDS that serve people with special needs, and extends compassion to rescued cats and other animals through donations and welfare initiatives.
For us, compassion is not limited to people alone. Every living being deserves kindness, care and respect.
Much of what happens at the temple is made possible through the generosity of volunteers and devotees who freely offer their time, skills and resources. Their quiet dedication reminds us that Buddhism is not simply practised within the temple walls—it is lived through our everyday actions.
